August 10 — St. Lawrence

In August 258, Roman soldiers discovered. Pope Sixtus and his deacons conducting a Mass in the catacomb of Callistus. The Emperor Valerian had begun a persecution aimed particularly at the hierarchy of the Church. Pope and deacons were beheaded, except for the deacon Lawrence, who was ordered by the prefect of Rome to produce the treasures of the church some days later. At that time, deacons were responsible for charitable distributions of the church and for administration of temporal goods. The account of his death says that he quickly distributed as much as he could to the needy and assembled a group of the poor and told the prefect, "Here are the treasures of the church." The prefect then ordered his execution, which the tradition says took place on a large grill over a fire, and his remains were buried on August 10. The Basilica of St. Lawrence was built over his gravesite and became a popular destination for pilgrims.
