Fun to think about. OTOH if the US hadn't been independent in the time of Jefferson, much of the continent might have remained in French and Spanish hands — which might or might not have been a good thing.

I suspect the author of the piece was just thinking of the current U.S.A. as part of Canada. But it wouldn't necessarily have worked out that way.
interesting. I doubt that the French would have held on to the 'Louisiana Purchase' land. Remember, Jefferson approached Napoleon about buying only New Orleans, and Napoleon offered to sell all of his lands. He didn't want to be in America anymore.
Of course, had we remained under British rule, that land may have gone to the Spanish.
